MEET MARK HARTSOE
My wife Amy and I have three children: Watson, Henry and Teddy. I enjoy spending time with my family, watching soccer tournaments, and getting out to our family farm in Walland, where I enjoy gardening, physical labor and country living. I also enjoy bicycling along the Little River and other outdoor activities including hiking, surfing, hunting and fly fishing.
Favorite food: Pizza, seafood, cheese grits
Favorite Artists: My favorite artist is my great, great grandfather Frederick Roeth who was a fresco artist in the 19th century. He was one of the artists who painted the murals in the United States Capitol Building just before the Civil War. I have a number of his paintings in my house and office. I am also fond of the painting that Warren Butler did of our family farm.
Favorite Music: Old Crow Medicine Show (especially Wagonwheel), Jack Johnson, bluegrass and reggae.
Favorite Book: I enjoy anything written by Wendell Berry (essays, fiction, poetry) who writes about agricultural and cultural issues; I also enjoy Tobias Wolff, John Grisham, and David Baldacci.
Last Place Visited: Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks; Scotland to attend the Scottish Cup Soccer Championship.
Guilty Pleasure: A cold pale ale.
Community Involvement: I am currently serving my second three-year term on the Board of The Foothills Land Conservancy, which promotes preservation and protection of scenic resources, open spaces and farms. I recently served on the Board of The Wellness Community, which is a cancer support organization. I have coached youth soccer and baseball for many years.
